Grand Fire Protection District No. 1 is excited to introduce you to our Resident Firefighter Program. The primary intent of the program is to increase resources to meet the growing needs of the Fire District and to provide positive experiences, opportunities and training to young people interested in pursuing a career in the fire service. Resident Firefighters respond to a variety of calls including rescues, structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, and wildland fires.

The program is designed so that a two year commitment should allow the firefighter to achieve a variety of certifications including Colorado (IFSAC) Firefighter 1, Hazmat, Firefighter 2, Driver/ Operator Utility, and a NWCG Firefighter Type 2 and 1. Many other classes are available including water rescue, NWCG classes, and officer development classes. Residents have the opportunity to advance and run auto aid calls with mutual aid agencies.

Resident Firefighters are individuals who are selected to become members of the Volunteer Fire Department and take residency within one of Grand Fire Protection District’s apartments, at one of two stations. The resident firefighter is provided living accommodations and basic utilities at no cost and is expected to fill shifts in return (two 24-hour shifts per week that includes two 8-hour station duty day shifts). Resident firefighters are encouraged to obtain outside employment in the county.

Residents from Grand Fire Protection District have come from all over the country and have been successfully places with many career departments in both rural and urban areas, including Colorado Springs Fire, Falcon Fire, South Adams County Fire, Westcott Fire, Thornton Fire, Lake Dillion Fire Rescue, Castle Rock Fire, Colorado River Fire Rescue, Louisville Fire, North Metro, the Craig Hot Shots, and the US Forest Service.
